Moving Checklist #NationalChecklistDayYou read our advice about prepping to list your home, which has just sold – Congratulations! The Builds by The Bay team has helped you find your dream home in the perfect Thornbury neighbourhood. Therefore we are now prepping for you to move your belongings, so in honour of #NationalChecklistDay we have created the ultimate moving checklist for you!

Packing, organizing and getting ready for the big move!

Ultimate Moving Checklist:

The Move

– Budget for your move

– Hire movers (a company or ask friends/family for help)

– Arrange moving truck & dolly and/or storage locker

– Take photos of your home/favourite styled spaces to recreate after your move

– Purchase or rent boxes, tape, labels, newspaper and floor mat/drop cloths

– Sort closets/drawers/cabinets etc.

– Pack items (BONUS: create a moving day survival box with items needed immediately Example: scissors for opening boxes, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, outfit for the next day, phone charges, pet food/snacks, cereal bowls, coffee&tea with mugs, overnight toiletries, etc.)

– Sell or donate unused items

– Toss broken belongings & properly dispose items (flammables, batteries, etc.)

Be sure to deep clean your NEW house before you move in, and old house after you move out

Cleaning

– Either hire cleaners or clean yourself both at your sold and new home

– Remove nails & repair holes in walls

– Dust ceiling fans

– Clean windows & doors

– Vacuum floors & steam clean carpets

– Clean bathroom mirrors & countertops, showers, toilets

– Clean kitchen countertops, sink and appliances

Don’t forget to update your important documents and IDs with your new address

Update Documents/IDs

– Mail forwarding

– Obtain important documents (schools, doctors, pharmacy, bank)

– Update address on IDs (Health card, Drivers License, CRA, etc.)

Moving checklist, be sure to update your services

Don’t forget to update your services, such as utilities – you don’t want to move in without internet, hydro, or water!

Update Utilities & Services

– Gym/golf/community centre memberships

– Notify current services that you are moving

– TV, Internet & Phone

– Electricity

– Gas

– Water

– Get Home Insurance

– New Waste Collection Schedule

– Locksmith to change the locks at your new home

Don’t forget to take a family photo!

After The Move

– Test alarms (smoke, security, carbon monoxide, etc.)

– Unpack & get organized

– Celebrate (BONUS: with a family photo in your old & new home for the memories)

– Confirm your new address with: employer, doctors, etc.

– Leave review for your real estate agent & movers

– Introduce yourself to the neighbours
