The Town of the Blue Mountains primary population centre is Thornbury but within the town’s territory includes the charming communities of Banks, Camperdown, Castle Glen Estates, Christie Beach, Clarksburg, Craigleith, Duncan, Gibraltar, Swiss Meadows, Heathcote, Kolapore, Lora Bay, Loree, Ravenna, Red Wing, Slabtown, and Victoria Corners. Each of these little pockets has a special charm unique to that place alone.
When you think of the Blue Mountains most think of the Village. The Blue Mountain ski resort started back in 1941 and steadily grew until Intrawest purchased the land in 1999 and developed the public access resort you see today with boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants, hotels and chalets. Alterra Mountain Company now owns Intrawest and the resort. With over 2,000,000 visitors a year it is now the third largest ski resort in Canada. Skiing, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing, and Cross-country Skiing are winter events and in the summer there is golfing, hiking, downhill/cross-country biking, mini putt, and base events like ropes and tree climbing, there is even a roller coaster! There are also several private ski clubs Osler, Craigleith, Alpine, and The Peaks.
So many wonderful things are happening in The Blue Mountains. Lora Bay in Thornbury continues to grow and will have a few new development projects in the works coming soon.
